SEO is so Meta – Issue #017

SEO is so Meta – Issue #017

Actionable SEO Tip of the Week

Meta tags and headings are some of the most important elements in SEO on-page optimization. They are crucial when trying to rank for a specific topic or keyword.

Being something so basic and well known, we may think that everyone gets them right, but the truth is that most websites don’t.

Over the years, I have audited hundreds of websites, and most of them are not using meta tags and headings in the right way, so I figured this would be a great opportunity to talk about them and give you some suggestions.

Meta Tags you need to optimize

Title Tag

The title tag is one of the most important tags because it serves two purposes, it tells Google what the main topic of the page is about and it is also shown to users on search results.

The meta title should be no more than 55-60 characters long and include a preview of what the content is about, along with the top keyword for the page.

That means that in order to optimize your page title tag, you need to do keyword research first to determine which are the best top keywords for each page.

title

Meta description

Even though the meta description has no direct influence on improving rankings, it is important because it can help increase your organic CTR.

The meta description should provide a more thorough description of the content, and ideally include a call to action that persuades searchers to visit the site.

The length of the meta description may vary, but it’s better to keep it under 165 characters long.

As with the title tag, make sure to include your top keyword or at least a variation of it to keep it relevant to what the user was searching for.

Canonical tag

This tag is usually underestimated because it’s not something that anyone will see, but Google will, so it’s very important.

The Canonical tag is used to tell Google what is the original source of a piece of content. The common setup is that each page should have a canonical tag linking to itself.

This helps Google understand priorities better and improve indexing. Also, if you republish content on other websites, the canonical tag will tell search engines what website has the original content.

Heading Tags you need to optimize

H1 tag

The H1 tag is the most important of all the heading tags because, just like the meta title, Google uses it to understand what the main topic of the content is about, that’s why it should also include the top keyword for the page.

Sometimes the heading tags (H1 – H6) are used purely because of their CSS styling. Because of that, it is a common mistake to include several H1 tags within a single page. This is a big no-no.

Since search engines use the H1 tag to understand the main topic of the page, having several H1 tags will create confusion when indexing the content.

So the rule of thumb is to include only one H1 tag per page.

If you need more heading tags because of the styling, you can use any of the H2 through H6 headings and customize the CSS.

H2 tag

This tag is used as a secondary heading and you can have as many as you need on the page. If it makes sense within the content, it is a good idea to include your top keyword or variations of it at least once in your H2 tags.

Yeah, I know that the above may seem very basic, but you have no idea how many times we get the basic stuff wrong, even when it has the potential to drastically improve our SEO.
