Rank with Old Content – Issue #014

Rank with Old Content – Issue #014

Actionable SEO Tip of the Week

Usually, whenever we talk about ranking on Google we think of creating new content to publish on our websites.

There’s nothing wrong with that approach, but, did you know that it could be easier and faster to rank with old content?

Ranking with old content

New content takes longer to rank, mainly because new pages are not indexed immediately by Google, in fact, it could take weeks or even months for new content to get show up in search results. Also, new pages have little to no PageRank.

On the other hand, old website content is usually already indexed, and if you did your internal linking right, most likely it also has some authority, which will help it rank faster.

What you need to do:

1. Identify old pages or content you haven’t updated in a while.

2. Grab the URLs of those old pages and go to Google. Once there, use the “site:” search operator to confirm that the URLs are indexed.

3. Based on the topic of the content, do keyword research to determine what keywords it could/should be ranking for. Add those keywords to your keyword rank tracker to keep an eye on your rankings.

Now here comes the good part

4. Rewrite and refresh your old content optimizing it for the keywords from the previous step.

That’s it, all you have to do now is wait and keep an eye on your rankings and organic traffic!

Bonus: If you want to help your updated content rank much faster, make sure you link internally to it from other pages or blog posts that are already driving traffic.
