Let’s start with the basics, CTR stands for Click-through Rate, and here is the definition straight from Google:

“A ratio showing how often people who see your ad or free product listing end up clicking it. Clickthrough rate (CTR) can be used to gauge how well your keywords and ads, and free listings, are performing.

CTR is the number of clicks that your ad receives divided by the number of times your ad is shown: clicks ÷ impressions = CTR. For example, if you had 5 clicks and 100 impressions, then your CTR would be 5%.”

CTR is an important metric used more commonly on paid ads campaigns, but it also applies to organic search results, and we can refer to it as Organic CTR, which by the definition above is how many people who see your website in organic search results, actually click and visit.

If your CTR is higher, it means more people are clicking over to your website.

The only way to check your organic CTR is within Google Search Console.

How to increase your Organic CTR

The only way to increase your CTR is by making your organic listing more appealing to the needs and intent of the people who are searching on Google.

In other words, optimize your meta title and description to attract more clicks.

Optimize your page title tag: As you probably know, Google is now rewriting title tags to whatever it feels will provide more value to users.

Regardless, do your best to optimize your title tag so it clearly tells the user what your content is about.

Make sure to include your top keyword and also include it in your H1 tag, because if Google decides to rewrite your title, it will most likely use the content of your H1.

Optimize your meta description: You may not know this, but Google does not use your meta description as a ranking factor, but it does help improve your chance of getting a click, in other words, to improve your organic CTR.

How? You can use the meta description to tell the user why they should click on your organic listing.

So don’t just use the default excerpt, instead write compelling content, along with benefits and a strong call to action.
