Knowledge Base SEO – Issue #027

Actionable SEO Tip of the Week

When we talk about creating content to rank on Google, we usually think about blog posts, but that’s not the only type of content you can use for your SEO

It doesn’t matter if you have a SaaS, digital product, local business, sell physical goods, or do freelancing work, your potential customers will have questions, and usually, they will search on Google for answers to those questions.

A knowledge base can help answer those questions, and an SEO-optimized knowledge base can help drive qualified traffic to your website

What is a knowledge base?

Let’s start with the basics. A knowledge base is a self-serve library that provides helpful articles to end-users. It is usually in the form of help docs, how-to guides, frequently asked questions, troubleshooting guides, etc.

If you want to see an example of this, check out the KatLinks knowledge base.

Knowledge Base SEO

Doing SEO on your knowledge base is no different than doing SEO to any other type of content on your website.

Here are some things that you need to do:

Keyword research: Yes, just like for any other type of content, you need to research your keywords. The difference here is that the topics will usually be structured around questions “how”, “when”, “what”.

Meta tags: Same as your blog posts, knowledge base articles will need to have an H1 tag, page title tag, meta description, and additional heading tags as required (H2 – H6). Optimize your meta tags so they include the top keywords of your help articles.

Optimize images: Most knowledge base articles will have images and screenshots to visually educate and guide users. Make sure all images are SEO optimized for size and format, and of course, don’t forget to your image alt tags.

Content structure: Organize your knowledge base content by topics or clusters and make sure you have an intro page with links to all sections and top articles. This will provide users with a better experience and will also make the content easier to crawl for search engines.

XML sitemap: We really want Google to index every article in your knowledge base, so make sure you create an XML sitemap file and submit it via Google Search Console.

Internal links: Connect your knowledge base content together with internal links. Internal linking will help guide users to other related/useful content, will allow for page authority flow, and improve search engine indexing.

Don’t use a subdomain: Unless it’s technically impossible, try to set up the knowledge base as a subfolder of your main domain, and not a subdomain. Your SEO will be much stronger and the knowledge base content will feed off your root domain’s authority. To learn more about this, read this article where I talked about using subdomain vs subfolder for your blog. The principle is the same.

Optimizing your knowledge base for SEO will not only help your current customers find the solutions they need, but it will also help attract organic traffic from potential qualified leads that are searching on Google.
