Avoid Keyword Stuffing – Issue #013

Avoid Keyword Stuffing – Issue #013

Actionable SEO Tip of the Week

Keywords are the foundation of SEO content creation. That’s why before you start writing, you should do keyword research to determine what topics you will be focusing on.

If you want your content to rank on Google, you need to optimize it for the main keywords related to your topic. That basically means that you have to include your keywords throughout the content.

But, how many times should your keywords be mentioned? I get this question a lot, so I’m going to try to answer it right now. But first, a little history…

Keyword stuffing

A long time ago, before Google got smarter, all you had to do to rank for a keyword was to repeat it as much as possible. Sounds silly, but it actually worked

So to take advantage of that, people stuffed the content with keywords in order to make it rank higher. The problem was that it provided a lousy experience to the user because the content made no sense when reading it.

Let’s say someone was trying to rank for “CRM software”. A piece of content with keyword stuffing would read something like this:

“Our CRM software is one of the top CRM software solutions for small businesses that need a CRM software to manage their leads and sales. How can a CRM software help your business? A CRM software can keep track of your CRM software leads so your sales department can focus on sales follow-up with the help of our CRM software.”

Once Google improved its algorithm, that practice stopped working and even became harmful because Google was able to see that you were trying to game the system by over-optimizing.

The funny thing is that after many years, people still think that you have to stuff your content with keywords so it can rank

How to avoid keyword stuffing

Yes, you have to use keywords, but not like that. You have to be smart and create a balance between keyword repetition and creating valuable content.

Here are a couple of things you can do to avoid keyword stuffing your content:

Keyword density

This refers to a recommended average of keywords per number of words in your content.

The suggested keyword density is 1% to 2%. That means that if you write 1000 words of content, you should use your keyword no more than 10 to 20 times.

Of course, that does not mean that you have to use the same keyword 20 times. This is where related keywords come in.

Related keywords

These are keywords that are related to your top keyword, so instead of using the same keyword 10 times, you can mix and match the related keywords. You can use any keyword tool to find related keywords, but of course, I recommend you use KatLinks

If you stick by the recommended keyword density and use related keywords, you can avoid overusing your keywords.

Remember that SEO optimization, which includes keyword usage, should never be above content quality and user experience.
