Technical SEO involves optimizing your website to improve search engine rankings. It’s a crucial aspect of SEO that you cannot ignore. You can write the world’s best content, but it will never be discovered if your website fails on the technical part.

So, let’s dive into five basics of technical SEO:

Site Speed Optimization

In a world where people are impatient with almost everything, your website’s speed matters. The longer it takes to load, the higher the bounce rate. Search engines prefer faster-loading websites because they improve user experience (UX). Some of the things you can do to improve the speed of your website are to compress images, enable caching, and use a content delivery network (CDN).

Mobile Responsiveness

Did you know that over 50% of the world’s internet traffic comes from mobile devices? For some industries, it’s even higher! If your website isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re losing out on a ton of potential visitors. Responsive design is crucial because it ensures your website looks and works optimally regardless of screen size, which improves the user experience.

Website Security

Google will put your website off-limits to users if it’s not secure enough. You need to check whether your website has an SSL certificate, which encrypts any data exchanged between your users and your website. Without an SSL, your website is prone to cyber-attacks and sensitive data breaches.

If you use WordPress, you must be on top of core, theme and plugin updates to avoid malware and other security-related issues.

Sitemap and Robots.txt

Search engines rely on sitemaps and robots.txt files to accurately crawl and index your website. A sitemap notifies the search engine of all the pages on your website that you want it to crawl and index. It’s like a roadmap to guide it to the right pages. A robots.txt file tells the search engine which pages not to index, thus saving your crawl budget.

Schema Markup

Schema markup is a code you add to your website that helps search engines generate more informative and visually appealing search results. It provides search engines with the context they need to determine what the content is about. Schema markup can increase your click-through rates and provide a better user experience.

There are many to choose from, but here are some of the most popular schema markup types:

  • Product: Schema markup to describe specific products, including details like name, price, availability, and customer ratings.

  • Review: Schema markup for displaying product or service reviews, including ratings, reviewer name, and comments.

  • FAQ: Schema markup for frequently asked questions, allowing search engines to display question and answer content directly on the search results page.

Of course, there’s a lot more to technical SEO, but if you start with these foundational elements, you’ll be well on your way to having a website that Google will want to rank on search results.
