📢 This issue is brought to you by a Smart AI Copywriting tool that generates SEO-optimized blog posts in a couple of minutes.
Yes, you read that right. Real SEOs steal. And before you start saying, “Come on Roberto, what’s wrong with you?!“, I’m not talking about anything illegal or unethical. (or am I? 😂)
I’m talking about stealing the best strategies, practices, and ideas from your competitors and making them work for you. In other words, doing SEO competitor analysis 🕵️
The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all SEO strategy. What works for one website may not work for another. Still, discovering what your direct competitors are doing, especially if they’ve been doing it for longer than you, is a great way to kick-start your own SEO strategy.
Here are some tips to “steal” your way into SEO success:
1. Steal their keywords
Figuring out what keywords you need to rank for is one of the most complicated non-technical parts of SEO. Luckily, unless you are in a brand new niche, there should already be competitors ranking on Google for the same keywords that are relevant to your business.
You can use a competitor keyword research tool like Ahrefs, SEMrush or KatLinks to discover those keywords.
2. Steal their content strategy
Look at what type of content your competitors are creating and the topics they are covering. Are they creating more informative blog posts, conversion-focused product pages, how-to guides or education content? Take what resonates best with your shared audience and see how you can improve it.
3. Steal their backlink strategy
Take advantage of the work already done by others. Do a competitor backlink analysis to discover the websites that are linking to them. And if you see that it’s relevant and makes sense, try to get links from those same websites by creating better resources than your competitors.
The same tools mentioned above can help you do backlink competitor analysis.
4. Steal their website design ideas
See how your competitors are designing their websites and how they are providing a great user experience. Is their website easy to navigate? Is it fast? Do they have clear calls-to-action? Learn from their successes and improve your own website accordingly.
Remember, “stealing” from your competitors is not about copying everything they do! It’s about taking what already works and putting your own spin on it. That way, you can use what you learn to create a more effective, comprehensive SEO strategy.
