Actionable SEO Tip of the Week

If you have a business in a highly competitive industry or niche, ranking on Google for your top keywords can feel like an impossible task

That’s because the most common keywords are very competitive, so it’s really hard to rank for them.

Also, in many cases, the websites that are ranking on the first pages of Google for these keywords are big and well-established brands.

Is there anything you can do? Yes! Long-tail keywords

What are long-tail keywords?

These are keywords or phrases that, as the name says, are longer than your typical generic keyword and are made up of several words. Usually, they tend to be longer but much more specific.

For example, as you probably know, I created an SEO tool called KatLinks. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view), the SEO tools and software industry is very competitive, packed with huge players like Ahrefs and SEMrush.

Trying to compete head to head with these behemoths for a generic keyword like “SEO tool” would simply be impossible for now.

Instead of doing that, I decided to niche down and target SaaS companies and Indie Makers, focusing on long-tail keywords like “SEO tool for SaaS”.

Yes, the search volume will be much lower, but the keyword is much more focused and specific, allowing me to rank faster for a highly relevant search phrase.

Currently, KatLinks ranks on page #1 of Google for “SEO tool for SaaS” and on page #2 for “Affordable SEO tool”.

Long-tail keywords are great for niched-down category keywords like the examples above and for creating very specific and relevant blog content.

How to find your long-tail keywords

Luckily, there are many tools with free options that can help you discover long-tail versions of your search phrases. You just have to do some research based on your seed keyword (your top generic keyword).

Here are some of the tools you can use:

Of course, many more tools are available, but these can get you started.
