“Home” on your Page Title – Issue #030

“Home” on your Page Title – Issue #030

Actionable SEO Tip of the Week

This week’s SEO tip is going to be quick but super actionable. Go check the Page Title of your homepage. If it says Home, you have some work to do

home page title

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably seen me mention this a couple of times, but I decided to write about it again because I keep seeing the same problem over and over again.

By default, most websites have the word “Home” on the Page Title of the homepage, usually followed by the website’s name, like in the image above.

That usually means that you have unoptimized meta tags, unless you are trying to rank for something “Home” related

What to do about it

Replace “Home” with the top keyword for your homepage. If you are unsure of what your top keyword should be, you are gonna have to do some keyword research to figure it out.

My quick suggestion would be to use a keyword that identifies your business category.

Instead of using “Home – Brand name“, try “Top Keyword – Brand name

Here are some examples:

 CRM Software – ACME CRM

Twitter Analytics Tool – ACME Analytics

WordPress Freelance Services – ACME WP

Carpet Cleaning San Diego – ACME Carpets

With something as simple as this your website’s homepage will be super relevant to your business category, which will help improve your SEO.

Of course, you should take it a step further and also create some content around that top keyword to increase topical relevance and have even better chances of ranking.

Simple right? Now go do it. Check your website’s page title and if you see “Home”, do something about it!

One last thing, in many cases you will not see “Home”, but you will only see the brand name. Something like this:

home page title brand only

The issue is exactly the same. It’s not helping your SEO, so go ahead with the same process of adding a top keyword to your page title.
